The role of a cardiac surgeon is one of the most difficult but also most important jobs that there is. As a cardiac surgeon, you hold the patient’s life and death in your hands. The majority of individual cardiac surgeon job descriptions include the following as primary duties: performing heart and chest cavity surgical procedures, running medical history checks on patients, and follow-up exams. Cardiac surgeons are usually placed on an on-call system, which can keep them working long and erratic hours. However, cardiac surgeons are extremely well-paid, earning well over six figures in almost all cases. The educational requirements for becoming a cardiac surgeon include a four year degree from a medical school, and extended training in the specialized field of cardiac surgery over the course of an additional 4 to 8 years.
