On average, federal employees enjoy better salaries and benefits than those working in the private sector. They fall under the Federal Wage System (FWS) or General Schedule (GS). According to the Bureau of Economic analysis, the average annual earning of a federal employee is $123,000. This includes average benefits to the extent of $41,000, most of which is the government’s contribution to the pension. Federal compensation has grown about 36.9% since 2000, after adjusting for inflation, while the average salary has grown 33% faster than inflation since the same period. Their pay has gone up by 428% since 1969.
