The term letter carrier is used as a gender-neutral substitute for `mailman’ ever since women also began joining the service. There are three types of letter carriers, namely city letter carriers, rural letter carriers and highway contract route carriers. City carriers are paid hourly and also overtime whenever essential, whereas rural carriers are paid for evaluated hours with overtime.
