Making a refreshing Macchiatto at home is not nearly as hard as you might think. You definitely do not need a giant stainless steel and copper contraption that costs hundreds of dollars and take hours to clean.
To make your own Macchiato, all you need are two simple pieces of equipment that can be bought for a total of under $20: a stovetop espresso maker and a milk frother. Stovetop espresso makers can be bought for as little as $7 at stores like Target, Wal-Mart, and on Amazon.com, and make great quality espresso. For instructions on how best to use it, please read our guide to making espresso without a machine. A milk frother is a kitchen tool specially designed for whipping up foam in milk and keep it foamy. You can buy one of these for $10-$20 from Amazon.com. An alternative to a frother is a hand blender if you have one.
Start things up by brewing up a pot of espresso. Set this aside with the lid on to stay warm. Pour half a cup of milk into a microwave-able company for 1 minute, or until steaming hot but not boiling. Put the mixing end of the milk frother into the hot milk and turn it on. Keep the tip of the frother just below the surface of the milk for the best results. If you are using a hand blender pour the hot milk into the tall bowl that comes with it before blending to prevent making a mess. Once the milk has been frothed, pour your espresso into an espresso cup or coffee mug. Spoon 3 tablespoons of milk froth on top of the espresso, but not the milk itself. Serve immediately.
Tips and Variations:
Heat your cup. You can do this easily by filling your cup with boiling water and letting it sit while you prepare the rest of the drink. Pour out the boiling water before adding in the espresso and milk froth. You can also microwave water directly in the cup to heat up that way. Heating up your cup helps to prevent your cold cup from cooling off your hot espresso.
Top with a sprinkle of cocoa powder, cinammon, or ground nutmeg.
Use soymilk instead of milk for a soy Macchiato.
Mocha Macchiato: Melt half an ounce of chopped chocolate into the hot espresso and mix well. You can also use 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup.
Caramel Macchiato: Mix in 2 tablespoons of caramel sundae topping into the espresso.
