What is Azodicarbonamide Used For? Health Benefits and Side Effects of Azodicarbonamide in Food

Azodicarbonamide is used as a food additive in the food industry and to improve the quality of flour. It is also used in the production of plastic and synthetic leather. It acts as a blowing agent and aids in the expansion of pipes and rubbers. Effects of Azodicarbonamide on the health of humans have not been fully evaluated yet, but evidence for respiratory sensitization has been found. Azodicarbonamide forms semicarbazide which is a known allergen and carcinogen. Moreover semicarbazide if administered in developmental age can lead to bone demineralization, alteration in tissue morphology, increase mortality rate and influence motor and exploratory behaviors.
