Alabandite is a rarely occurring manganese sulfide mineral. Alabandite forms in epithermal polymetallic sulfide veins and low-temperature manganese deposits. It occurs with acanthite, calcite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, rhodochrosite, rhodonite, sphalerite and native tellurium. There are over 220 registered discovery sites for alabandite, including some areas in the US. Crystallized specimens of alabandite are exceedingly rare and those available are sharp, very lustrous and distinct. Alabandite is generally not sold on the consumer market.
