Baddeleyite was described for the first time in 1892 in Sri Lanka, being named after Joseph Baddeley, the one who made the description. It is a scarce zirconium oxide mineral, transparent and translucent. It can be found in green, yellow or dark brown varieties. It is a mineral with a high density and also with a very high refractive index. There are a few places from where it can be extracted, such as Mogok, Myanmar or Sao Paolo in Brazil. Due to its rarity it is not commercialized. It is mainly sought by collectors and is not used as a faceted gem.
