What is the Average Cost of Food per Month? Average Monthly Food Price
Of course, the average cost of food per month from family to family varies. The USDA has established four different consumption levels for American families of four people. These levels are: thrifty, low-cost, moderate-cost, and liberal. These levels assume that all meals and snacks are consumed at home which is more cost-effective than eating out. The thrifty family of four on average spends $550 per month on food, and the Liberal family spends about $1100. One might assume that most families fall into the Low-cost and Moderate families which on average spend $700 and $875 per month respectively.
