The average cost of living in South Africa is lower then most European locations. With housing, for example, a large apartment in the city can be rented for just over $1,000 a month, cheaper in the outlying areas. Commuting on public transport is very affordable at less than $40 a month. Basic food items at the supermarket and clothing are about average and a couple could dine out for about $30. Utilities such as gas, electricity and water are $120 a month.
