What is the Average Cost of an Execution? Average Execution Price
A death penalty case generally costs double that of a non-death penalty case. It usually differs from state to state, though New York stopped death penalty for convicts in 2004. It always costs more to execute a convict rather than imprisonment for life. The high costs are usually incurred before and during the process of trial and not in post-conviction proceedings. Several factors like more than one and fairly longer trials, the overall duration and period of appeal influence the costs of an execution. The costs differ very much from state to state. For instance, in Maryland an execution costs as high as $3 million in a single case, while in a state like Kansas, it costs about $1.26 million.
