South Ossetia is a region of Georgia whose official status is somewhat disputed. South Ossetia declared its independence from Georgia in 1991 but is currently an official part of that country. South Ossetia is home to 70,000 people spread over 1500 mi.² of land with a Republican as its government. The capital city of South Ossetia is Tskhinvali.
