Sri Lanka is an island country southeast of the southern tip of the country of India in southern Asia. Surrounded entirely by the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is just 19 miles off the coast of India. Sri Lanka has the official languages of Sinhala and Tamil and has its capital in the city of Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte. Sri Lanka gained independence from the British Empire in 1948.
